[close] "Gone Girl" was a real sleeper hit in 2012. The third novel written by Gillian Flynn, it seems to have benefitted from a lot of word of mouth- so much so that it spent a long time on the bestseller list. Is the hype deserved?

This book is firmly in the line of being a suspense thriller, even though there is very little violence in the story. A young couple, formerly of New York City and now relocated to Missouri and nearly penniless, are experiencing a tough time in their marriage at anniversary #5. Then husband returns home to find wife missing and signs of a struggle. The police are called in, they follow the usual script of suspecting the husband first, and things keep getting uglier and uglier- even though technically there is no dead body on hand to prove that anybody committed a murder.

There are a number of clever twists to this story, and it would be unwise for me to issue any spoilers here. Suffice it to say that there are no truly virtuous characters in the story, there are only degrees of badness. Do you require a liking for the main characters to read a novel? If so, skip this one. But if you enjoy a genuinely creepy story in which a marriage goes wrong in a spectacular way, this book is for you.

the essential aspect of this book is that there are no likable characters- it is a portrait of a sociopathic marriage. there is considerable cleverness in the recounting of this tale of love that fades from infatuation into obsession. it does not all work- but much of it does work. At heart a cautionary tale- if you meet people like either of these two, run, do not walk, for the nearest exit......

I think Gillian Flynn may be striving to be the female Stephen King. She takes everyday people and pulls their dark sides to the forefront, so far I'm not afraid to go to sleep after reading her - but the day may come. I definitely don't want to anger some of her characters! ...more

I hated Nick but loved Amy in the beginning, started hating Amy and loving Nick only to end up hating them both. This story was twisted and I gave it three stars because the ending felt rushed.
