Apparently I started this book TWO YEARS ago, well, that's rather absurd.
WUBC is long - and it was not always what I was in the mood for. There are sections of it that are truly enchanting and delightful, and then there are sections that seem to drag... and drag and drag... and after a few months of hitting a lot of those sections at once (and I didn't have a lot of reading time anyway), I abandoned this for other books and it lived on my shelf for a while.

Surreal, absurd, exasperating. It's like a long boring dream where weird things happen and don't make any sense. I prefer a nightmare any day of the week. For the life of me, I don't understand the appeal of this type of fiction. But then I don't get the appeal of FaceBook, The Kardashians, Grey's Anatomy or Sex and the City, either. I will re-read this book. Couldn't stop thinking about it for ages after I finished reading it. The dream-like state Mr Murakami induces is something to be believed.

While I enjoyed Murakami's themes and prose, I didn't connect with his characters and certain aspects of the plot, i.e. the military scenes in Mongolia or May Kasahara's letters. In The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, I felt Murakami lacked focus.
