I have heard so many conflicting views about this book, this series in general. Some readers passionately praised Cassandra Clare's imagination while others thought it was overdone. It seems to depend on how much the reader enjoys fantasy, since, in my opinion, this novel is the epitome of the genre.

It seems to depend on how much the reader enjoys fantasy, since, in my opinion, this novel is the epitome of the genre.

I still haven't read the rest of the series, so until I do, I will be reviewing this book as a standalone novel rather than the introductory novel of the series. This book has actually been the most recommended book on my to-read list and I happened to come across it by chance. My first impression: I thought it was one of those Twilight stories with werewolves, vampires, and all that lot- an impression implied by the cover. And now that we're at it, the cover has almost nothing to do with the story.

 City of Bones is about Clarissa, a 15-year-old girl who discovers she can see things beyond the reach of a normal humans' sight. She and her childhood friend, Simon, find themselves in a life of Shadowhunters (a.k.a. demon hunters). However, hunting demons is the least of Clarissa's problems. Clary returns home to find her mom missing, discovers the truth behind her dad's death, unravels a secret in her and her new friends' past that will change their lives forever, and practically loses everything she had ever owned in a matter of weeks.

This book contains most of the elements I enjoy in a plot. The world is so majestic it stays implanted in your mind way after you've read the last chapter. When I first read the synopsis, I thought it would be one of those stories in which the author would throw in a bunch of mythical creatures just to prove that he/she has a wide imagination. However, the creatures and myths in this novel enhanced the plot rather than hindered it; the world was quite intriguing.

The plot, as well, was fast-paced and mind-twisting. The story actually comes to this certain turning point when the reader, along with the characters, staggers at to who is trustworthy and who is deceptive. It's hard to believe that anyone could get bored while reading this one. City of Bones was also one of those few novels that had a complicated plot yet maintained its humor. More importantly, the plot was unpredictable. I never saw most of those outcomes coming even though they couldn't be more reasonable.

I also marveled at how realistic the conversations seemed; they sounded just like conversations people make in real-life during similar situations. It's really hard to believe that this is Clare's debut novel; she certainly has an inborn talent.

Now, Jace- Jace deserves an entire paragraph to himself. Indeed, I enjoyed reading about all the characters. Each one seemed special in his/her own way. Clary, for example, is the perfect protagonist: she isn't too independent nor too useless. She's just right. Jace's character sketch, however, is definitely unique; I loved him. I mean, seriously, who couldn't? He accounted for most of the missing elements of the novel- the drama, the comic relief, the depth, the catharsis, so.. yeah.

Epic. Just epic. Recommended to all fantasy-lovers.

Yea, so I read this about two weeks ago and forgot to add it, lol. Anyway, so the reason I even READ it was because I was sick and tired of hearing how great it was. I finally said, "Ok! I'LL be the judge of that!" The results are in: It was great. I understand now what they all were talking about. Note: I do NOT like any books with vampires, werewolves, demons, or any other thing like that. YET, this book was still great. Very surprised. Also then ending with Clary and JAce! This is yet another book I couldn't finish. I gave it 5 stars because it was done so well. Great characters, story line and conflict. But I need romance, which this didn't have. Ok, maybe I'll get it up the road, but I can hang on that long.

City of Bones I fell in love with the first second Jace was introduced into the story, he is such a dream. The first introduction of Jace to Clary with Simon at the Pandemonium was tantalizingly-awesome.
