Pretty incredible. This book is hilarious, depressing and contains multitudes. One of this novel's many feats is its author's ability to make you see a peice of yourself in each of the characters EVEN AS you are laughing at them and loathing them.

Jonathan Franzen has a potty mouth. Then he tries to pass this one off as great lit. I read this along with Dante's Divine Comedy and The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway. Even in Hell and in Hemingway's PTSD world did eiter one find it necessary to use the F word, the C word, or spend pages writing about excrement or enemas. Franzen says his book is not for the "middle-brow" reader...and I completely agree. It is "low-brow."

The ending almost bumped this up to 4 stars, but all the characters were unlikable, if not understandable, and wouldn't do the smallest things to make others happy.
