I think a lot of people think this book is smut about pedophilia and child porn. Yes, Humbert Humbert likes sex. Yes, he talks about it some. Yes, a lot of the sex he talks about is with an underage girl. However, when Humbert/Nabokov talks about sex, he doesn't use the pornographic language I think a lot of people expect. "My heart was a hysterical unreliable organ."
I must be honest - this one took me quite a little while and left me terribly conflicted.
I've been attempting to read Lolita for years now, and took two serious attempts at it before I ultimately had to make it one of my resolution reads just so I'd finally commit to finishing the little bugger. I've tried to read Lolita multiple times, and found the opening sentence beautiful and goose-bump inducing--and couldn't get through much after that. The Audio book (read by Jeremy Irons) is an excellent antidote, allowing me to sail past the boring parts and be swept up be the erotic, disturbing, and self indulgent language of the heart of the novel.
