Call me a positive negativist (or is that negative positivist?) but this book was seriously too long. If the old bearded guy at the bar really was Hemmingway, Gaddis should have spent some time with him learning the art brevity! Really, how many times did we have to listen to Return to Sorrento on the jukebox?

I'm on page 100, and I'm not ... seeing the point? seeing the plot? getting in to it? The writing and language are beautiful, but by page 100 (even out of a 955-page book), you'd think we'd be in to the main plot of the story. But we're not. I keep feeling like we're building up to it, but we keep not getting there.
