I read this book about 11 years ago and really didn't like it, but didn't like it. So as a result, I wanted to re-read the book once again, hoping that I would probably have a different opinion about the book, but alas I didn't. I don't know why, but it really felt like it was a book about a bunch of boys who were just stranded on an island and didn't know how to organize themselves. More or less, it just frustrated me and left me scratching my head as to what the point of the book exactly was.

I read this for the upteenth time with my high school English class, and as always, I marvel at the skill with which Golding weaves his metaphor of human society. This is one of the most brilliant pieces of fiction I have ever read. Golding's prose is gorgeous--his words are chosen wisely to paint a picture both vibrant and bleak. His use of symbolism is stunning--everything in this book is symbolic, and each time I read it I discover more connections. Everyone should read this book.

What a great book! I never had to read this in high school, and I'm kind of glad--I probably appreciated it a lot more as an adult than I would have as a teenager. It's really terrifying to see how the boys break down from civilized individuals to a savage pack. I was holding my breath for Ralph right up until the last page! Not only is the storyline engaging, but I like the allegorical message it communicates about human instincts and society. Great stuff.
