this book was first given to me by my 4th grade assistant teacher, toted as being her favorite book of all time. although i did read it at that tender young age, i didn't find it very intriguing nor relevant - after all, i was just in elementary school and hadn't accumulated any teenage angst. then, as i reread it in high school, it started making more sense. although it's not my personal favorite book of all time, it still resounded with the small part of me that's a rebellious holden caulfield

I know this book is often touted as one of the greatest works of American literature. Technically, Salinger did a wonderful job crafting a coming-of-age story. Personally, the book didn't appeal so much to me on an emotional level. Maybe it's because I really couldn't identify with Holden. It's hard to sympathize with a rich privileged boy going to a boarding school who's hanging out in some fancy hotel ordering room service. I found myself thinking, "There are bigger problems out there."
