This book was slow going for me. I found myself wondering what all of the fuss was about, but a line or a description would show me exactly why this novel is considered a classic. I'm fairly certain I would have rated this book 5 starts had I read it as a teenager. Holden Caulfield is a great character, but like others have mentioned he does get a bit too whiny at times. I found Holden's relationship to his sister endearing and genuine, it is the only relationship that rang true for me.

A guy that worked for my dad was living with us in ND while he was going to school. At 4:30 each day, we would watch Jeopardy and compete to answer more questions. There were several references to Catcher in the Rye so I read the book so I could beat the guy. Turns out that he had to read the book for a class he was taking so it was a wash. Bottom line: really good book.

I read this because several people raved about it. Honestly, I don't know what the big deal is. It was simply banal to me; the long, drawn out ramblings of a pessimistic teenage boy. Nothing engaging, nothing learned from reading it. Why it's considered such a remarkable classic is beyond me
