Once as a teenager, once when my kids were reading it in high school, and eight or nine times because Holden Caulfield is the imaginary best friend of the protagonist in my new novel in progress: Catcher, Caught. I read this because several people raved about it. Honestly, I don't know what the big deal is. It was simply banal to me; the long, drawn out ramblings of a pessimistic teenage boy. Nothing engaging, nothing learned from reading it. Why it's considered such a remarkable classic is beyond me
