Often in our lives, there comes a point when we must ignore a few scratches to see the bigger picture. Catcher in the Rye just happens to be a read that forces us to reach that point.

The material is dated; of that, I do not deny. However, even its dated references are easy to follow because of Salinger's brilliant writing technique. I read this book because it was suppose to be a "classic". I don't get it. It was an ok read. Holden is just like every teenage boy I've met, angry, destructive and thinks he knows it all. Again the story was ok but definitely not what I was expecting and frankly was disappointed by about 200 pages of it. I loved and hated the end. I wanted to know more but loved the last two pages and the point of the whole book in my mind. My favorite character by far is Phoebe, the little sister. It would be ...more

In high school I had to write an essay on a biography using the tone of an author. I picked JD Salinger. Very much enjoyed this story.

I decided to re-read this book being that it was one of my favorites in high school. I'm about 2/3 of the way through now and it's funny how a few years can totally change your perspective on something. First of all, I've read more and seen more classic movies so this time around I understand a lot more of the references to popular culture in the late 1940s as well as the popular literature references.

I'm also finding Holden's obsession with phony's really interesting. He's obviously rejecting
