When the earthquake in Haiti first hit, I was heartened to see that my local bookstore made an effort to stock and promote books about Haiti and by Haitian writers (most notably Edwidge Danticat). Quick read set in Haiti and seen through the eyes of a man. Ti Noel suffers at the hands of both black and white masters, as a young man and as an elderly man. Carpentier's novel doesn't get bogged down in description, so it moves fairly quickly and before you know it, it's over.

I had hard time reading this book. I don't really remember finishing it. Honestly - for people interested in history of Haiti and its surroundings.
