Every once in awhile, I force myself to read a classic that I should have read years ago. I remembered reading East of Eden in high school and loving it, so I thought I'd pick up another Steinbeck gem. From the first page, I was hooked by Steinbeck's writing. It seems so simple, but he captures everything so perfectly. This is a great little book that tells of the people in Cannery Row and the way in which they interact with one another. There is a part in the middle of this book that made me laugh more than I had for quite some time while reading a book. His excellent description of characters and setting help you imagine the interaction they share together in this small community.

Never read this Steinbeck in HS (after killing us with Grapes of Wrath I bailed on this and read The Pearl bc it was shorter).

Glad I waited until now. Beautiful interpolation of connected short story-ish chapters and nature writing.
