Well, I just finished this. The descriptions of the Salinas Valley are, perhaps unsurprisingly, spot-on and lovely. It's a short book, and perhaps a bit (or a lot) predictable, plot-wise (foreshadow much?). The best word is probably overwrought. But while in general the longish short story/novella is not my favorite literary form, there is something to be said for a tightly written short novel, and this is an excellent one.

I actually read this on my own when I was 12 or 13. My dad had a collected works of Steinbeck book and I picked it up while we were on vacation. I think I've re-read it since then but I'm not sure, plus I have all those movie versions floating around in my head too. The only negative thing I'd say about the book is the way it's perpetuated (or maybe it originated here) the notion that people with developmental disabilities are freakishly strong and unaware of their strength and therefore dangero
