I can't believe I let this one go so long before reading it. After all, it was made into a movie long before I was born, so it's not like it wasn't around for my entire life. Many books from this era are so dated as to be unreadable, but I found Postman to be still relevant and very readable. In fact, I read it all night long. Cain has an economy of verbiage that rivals that of Hemingway: he was able to cram this engaging story of lust and betrayal into a mere 119 pages.

He's no Ray Chandler, but who is? In this novella the characters are thinly, but fully sketched. But the characters don't matter, it's plot, the overwhelming sense of doom. Of course, the main characters' lack lack of a moral rudder is what pushes the story along. For them, there is nothing wrong with murder, as long as it serves your purposes -- and provided you don't get caught. But no one gets away free. Everyone's playing a game. You can't trust criminals. "The Postman Always Rings Twice" is a short enough novel to read, and is worthwhile to boot. If you like crime novels, written in the "beat" style like James Ellroy, then you will like this. I can see myself rereading this some time in the future. ...more

This was an easy, fast paced read. The story definitely made me anxious-you just know things aren't going to end well for the characters. It's funny that this book was considered so scandalous when there is very little by way of graphic content. Maybe that was the problem, what was left to the imagination was just considered too dangerous. ...more
