I've wrestled with this book for many years. I pick it up every now and then only to toss it to the side, because I find nothing worth caring about in its contents. A few weeks ago I picked it up again out of the blue, determined to finish the damn thing once and for all. Maybe it's just that I'm getting older, but I got on Hemingway's wavelength this time around, and I began to understand what he had to say. A line from the book sums up the book:
From Ch. XVII:
" 'I'm rather drunk,' Mike said. 'I'll stayrather drunk. This is all awfully amusing, but it's not too pleasant.' "
The good: The dialog. Approximately half the novel is told as dialog. The impression is that you are sitting at the next table in the cafe overhearing the dialog.
The bad: the characters are involved solely in drinking, fistfights, fishing (!) and watching bullfights. Yawn.
I'd recommend this one for a narrow group of readers:
