Impossible for me to hear the yearly updates of the running of the bulls in Pamplona without thinking about this one. Jake and Brett have a relationship, but due to his injury in WWI, Jake can't consumate the relationship with Brett. Jake finds peace elsewhere throughout France and Spain and everybody gets pretty drunk. Themes of the loss of innocence of ex-pats abroad and disillusionment with one's generation and the world are tough to not find timeless.

Maybe I just need to read Hemmingway in a book club where someone can explain to me why he is such a famous author. For Whom the Bell Tolls was tolerable, but this was just tedious and beyond boring. The one highlight was his being in Pamplona, a place I have also visited at that time of year.

A good book ... I don't quite get what all of the hubbub over this book is about, but maybe if I'd read it in its own era I'd get it better... Maybe the characters would be more noteworthy and the style would be more remarkable.
Still, a good read. ...more
