A friend of mine is a history professor. She often reminds me that people have not always thought the way we think. I had to keep that in mind as I read this lovely story of Lily Bart. It was hard not to judge Lily by 2010 standards. I had to accept that Lily was a product of her time and place. She made the best of life in her world as she could. Nevertheless it was hard to watch her life unravel.

The main character is brought up to live a certain life that becomes a problem when she desires more then the superficial. An interesting look at the options that an unmarried woman had during this time period when she chose to not follow the course set for her.
