This was a book I'd always intended to read but never quite got round to it. Right from the first paragraph, you're placed in a time and set of values that help to understand some of the wider background to the story.
I have no interest whatsoever in sailing but nonetheless I was gripped by the riddle and the exciting sea journeys.

I have some reservations about this early work of espionage fiction, mostly the nationalist bent of the plot (but what do you expect from a spy novel), but I must admit: it is SO WELL DONE! It's just a wonderfully gripping adventure novel. I love the seafaring and geographical detail, the ambiance, the way you really get to know the two main characters, everything. It's well written, super fun, and only as problematic as you would expect from a British spy novel written in 1903. Oh, how innocent
