304 books ago, I reviewed Bel Ami, my first Maupassant novel and, coincidentally, the one he wrote just before this one. Thankfully, although it still deals with the worst of our fallen nature, at least you have some sympathy and understanding for the characters involved. With Bel Ami, I just wanted to punch the protagonist in the face.

So intense! While the plot hinges on a shame that today would not be much remarked on in most families, it rends the family at its center. The writing is beautiful and, even in translation, seems tres francais to me. It is a very short novel, quickly read, but deep with emotion wonderfully expressed. But the moments of comedy brought some snorts of laughter. The father is such a buffoon! (Used from Powell’s)
