I got a little over halfway through...it was OK, but I just couldn't keep my mind from wandering when I read it. I put it down one day and picked up another book and can't bring myself to pick it back up. One day, I will read it from cover to cover. But, with a little help from my friends I have made the executive decision to just quit - there really are more books in the world to read that won't make me feel like I am doing something I should be doing rather than something I want to be doing. Middlemarch seemed a reconciliation with reality. George Eliot's ceaseless insight is exhausting. Kinda depressing concoction of dessicated dreams.

This is the book that drove me to Russian history. Up until that point, I was pretty sure I wanted to study 18th century british history. I HATED this book, and particularly its insipid tone. It has stunningly wellcrafted proses, characters that are incredibly human in their flaws, some of whom are likable and some of whom are not, but none of whom are one dimensional. George Eliot has long been my favorite author, but Middlemarch has surpassed Daniel Deronda as my favorite book. ...more

This book was a massive undertaking and only made slightly easier by the fact that I was sick and therefore had lots of time to read. George Eliot is a master of characterization. In this book she brought to life a whole community of complex characters and made me care about what happened to them.

Did it take a while? Yes. Was it worth it? Definitely.

OK I'm in love with this time period ... mid 1800's England ...
Brilliant writing & character development (lots of characters but I wasn't confused at any point) Can't wait to read more by "George Elliot".
