Morbidly amusing at first, but it got kind of tedious.

This is a work that would have benefited from the old advice, "show; don't tell."

I read this in email format through dailylit.com. I really enjoyed this book. The story was not a happy one, but I really liked Zola's style and what he did with the characters. And I thought the ending was great. I would eventually love to read this in the original French. ...more
