In comparison to Evelina, read earlier this spring and only thinks it's an epistolary novel, THIS is an epistolary novel. Because each letter actually reads like a real letter, not a narrative novel chapter bookended with a "Dear ____" and "Yrs." for appearances.

Really good but a bit boring in the middle.
It's not an easy read, even in translation. Compound sentences were the mood of the day and modern readers will find it challenging to slog along. Still, the spicy subject matter can hardly fail to entertain, especially in the last third when all the chickens come home to roost. ...more

Great story and movie adaptation. I really like it much. Story showing that some relations can be dangerous, we don't always get what we want and intrigues are not always leading to target.
