Fantastic story set in 17th century Japan, 2 priests travel to a country which has outlawed christianity in order to find out what has happened to another priest. Interesting because this wasn't a time or place I've ever studied though I'd read shogun which is set prior to this book.
The book is told from the point of view mainly of one priest, and gives a strong sense of the character and what he's feeling. Read it in one sitting as it was so hard to put down. ...more

Maybe I'm not ready for this book. It's a graphic account of the extensive tortures applied to Christians in Japan, based on historical documents. Not a particularly refreshing subject.
