Davies does a pretty good job of portraying life in an eastern-Canadian small town at the turn of the century. The utter Scottishness of all aspects has diluted a bit since then but basically it's the same. In fact, the whole of Canada has a Calvinistic streak that is one of the major points of differentiation from American small town life. There is something here for foreigners to learn.

Robertson Davies is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. Considering that my all-time favorite author (Margaret Atwood) is also Canadian, I wonder if there are other awesome Canadian writers out there I should be collecting.

Great read. With all the Jungian larks it both laments and complies with mystery's demise.
