Myth, memory, superstition, and childhood innocence all intertwine to make this a compelling and beautiful story.
My two favorite characters were both loving mothers but only minor characters. I loved Giselle Mahmoud, Materia's mother. Even though her husband expelled Materia from the family she found ways to support her daughter and her granddaughter. I respected this. And Mrs. Luvovitz, the Jewish neighbor. She was a true friend to the Piper family and the perfect loving mother.
