Beautifully written, melancholy, describes well for non-Turks the contemporary struggle between secularism and stricter observance of Islam, as well as other historical conflicts with Armenians, Communists, and other groups.

This was a strange book that had little meaning to me until the very VERY end. Because a real understanding of the purpose of the book didn't come until the last several pages it's not high on my list of recommendations. ...more
