Like many promising novels, this has quirky, characters that I was initially engaged with: the orphan, the cook, the charming sisters Lola and Noni. I was less interested in the parallel story of the cook's son and his horrible jobs working in American restaurants.

The judge (grandfather of the orphan) is a mean bastard, somehow capable of tender love for his dog, Mutt. We don't know why he is so awful, at least I don't.

I have a thing for Indian writers. I love the way in which they use the English language. They twist it in new ways that is witty and poetic. The Inheritance of Loss was just such a treat and tickled my love of good writing. I loved the characters and my heart ached for all of them...espically poor Mutt. Maybe not a book for every reader but I loved every page!

OK i loved A FINE BALANCE and thought no other book would affect me like that ... THE INHERITANCE OF LOSS is very very close... loved the character development and her language is AMAZING ! I listened to it and the narrator was incredible, but also felt maybe it was one of those books that should have been "read" since Desai's use of the english language is so beautiful ... absolutely beautifully written. I thought it got off to a pretty slow start and the first half had a few too many heavy-handed metaphors, but the last 150 pages or so were breathtaking. Also it's a region and a period of time I know next to nothing about and it left me wanting to do my research. ...more

OK. After reading A Fine Balance, this kind of pales in comparison, though this was more political in nature.
