I feel like this book has changed me some how. I'm not sure how. I mean, it's not possible to have travelled through this universe of sun, cashew trees, jollof rice, confusion, chin-chin, hope, idealism, garri, war, starvation, refuge camps, and red dusty roads, and not emerge on the other end without having been changed in some ways. This was an amazing book. While I really enjoyed the writing and themes in Purple Hibiscus, HoaYS just seemed weightier; there's more to it in terms of plotting and character development. I won't completely give it away, but the narrative structure actually made me gasp with excitement about halfway through; how often does that happen? I knew nothing about the Biafran conflict in the late 1960s. I know considerably more now. Yellow Sun is an eye-opener. Very movingly written and yet never far away from the resolute humour that characterises many of the novel’s cast.
