I can't help it - I just really don't like James Joyce. Modernism as a whole rubs me the wrong way, something about it is just so elitist, and Joyce is no different. Portrait, too, is just no fun to read at all, and I really had to make myself get through it all.

Honestly, what pushed this book from "really liked it" to "it was amazing" was the fact that I read it while traveling in Dublin. As I was getting ready to leave on my trip, I felt suddenly that I should take Joyce with me, since I had never read him before. My mother said "Portrait is pretty accessible." She meant, I think, as opposed to Ulysses which is the classic "wandering around Dublin" book or, heaven forbid, Finnegan's Wake which I would never in a million years attempt. But Portrait was
