This is another book that read quickly in my recent stroll through some of the classics. The story is about an Irish youth named Stephen who becomes a lapsed Catholic and has some issues with women. Talk about a story that hits close to home. Joyce is an undisputed part of the pantheon, but I find a lot of his sentences extremely difficult to slog thorough. joyce's prose is, as always, stunning. his honesty is brutal and beautiful. he says as much by omission as by inclusion, a quality i envy. his sense of rhythm is unbelievably breathtaking. (read some of this aloud, really. i'd like to get this as an audiobook.) this is a work that stays together only via the attractive force of contradiction - the perfect glue for a coming-of-age novel. since i hadn't picked up any joyce in many years, i'd forgotten that he's quite good at erotic prose. if i hav
