Drop City was a solid read. Tracing the journeys of members of a commune and the lives of those native Alaskans they encounter, the novel is both social commentary and strong narrative. Evocative both of communal living and the pioneering lifestyle, the prose was fluid.

More interesting, though, was the decidedly apolitical view of both lifestyles whch are outside the status quo. While pointing out the limitations of homesteading and relative anarchy, one never felt the author was lauding one cho

I tried. Really. I did. I just couldn't get into it. Am I missing something with T.C. Boyle? I know many people that LOVE his books, but I just don't agree. This is my second attempt (only taken because my best friend says he is aweseom) at a TC Boyle book and I am not convinced. Am I trying the wrong books?

I would give it 2.5 stars. I think the descriptions in the book are marvelous but the characters need more development. Considering how I am a person that prefers classic literature I guess this book was ok.

Accessible and fast paced story of a hippie commune headed to Alaska and the homesteaders they meet there. I've been needing to read something with a straightforward narrative structure, and this really worked for me.

Some things about how it all ended up didn't sit right with me, abd I can't wait to discuss those things at genre X tonight...

Usually I hate books about hippies getting high, but this one was good. I liked that it wasn't only about being a hippie, but about the bad things that can happen when a bunch of hippies move to Alaska to get closer to nature. ...more
