The characters are referred to by letters, which makes them seem to stand for more than just any individual. People deal with what is happening to them in different ways, by pretending it's not them, or trying to seem invisible. It's harrowing and difficult to read, but it's also a book which ends with a glimmmer of hope. ...more

Enter yet another war I seem to have paid little attention to at the time. In a story that could have been ripped right from 1942 Germany, is a story of modern people doing thoroughly unmodern things to people they had only recently been watching television with. There are plenty of parts of the story that were distasteful and points where it seemed impossible that characters would act as they did, but it was certainly poignant.
