What Members Thought

As I read this book, it was hard for me to believe that it was a work of fiction. The narrator was so real, and her thoughts so vivid, that I couldn't imagine someone--especially an American male--making it up. I was captivated almost instantly by Chiyo's story of hardship, hope, and love. And the immersion into the geisha culture was eye-opening for me--I knew very little of it before I read this book. This is the best book I've read this year, narrowly surpassing Water for Elephants.

I read this book in three days; it was arresting and swift and sometimes sincere. But it's written by a man and an American at that, and it sometimes reads like a vessel for pretty imagery that puts no value on the motives and feelings of real people. It's worth a read when you have the time but definitely not worth the hype.

Loved this book. Incredibly disappointed by the movie that I saw on DVD because I knew I wouldn't like it. I just think the story is so readable and you really root for the heroine. He gives you such an in depth description of the time and place. My only complaint may be that the war years are quite glossed over.

Really enjoyed this book while louging on the beach in Cannes. Couldn't put it down. This brought me back to pleasure reading.
