This is the gem that every book should be yet so few are: concise yet poetic; understated yet powerful. Set in Lisbon in 1938, when the civil war was raging in Spain and the Portuguese were subjected to Salazar's authoritarian regime, the story is centered around a doddering old Portuguese journalist who gradually becomes aware of profound issues in life which he can no longer ignore. I read the book in Italian but I recommend it in any language! ...more
