a seemingly simple setting and plot frame a more emotionally-complex tale of love gained and tragically lost (not in the way you would expect, either). wharton was really quite good w/ conveying the nuances of the central romance. by our standards, we might not even call it much of a relationship, but then again, we'd be missing out on the subtleties of love (as potentially scandalous as it might've been). ...more
