Simple and beautiful story of three people, each suffering in quiet desperation.
I did not read in this in school but I can see why teachers would teach it; it's short and the symbolism is obvious. I can also see why students don't like it. At a young age no one wants to think that life can turn out so bleak.

what a wonderful shift from Wharton's other NY City based novels (I've only read two) .... Western Massachusetts farm land ... amazing story.
