It is wonderful, but I find it really hard to explain why. Plotwise, nothing really happens. Maybe at the end of the book, because some family secrets get unveiled, but there's no (apparent) progression of a clear plot. The genius of this book is its prose, which grasps you and makes you go from one sentence to the next with an inexplicable intensity. Second book by Marias, an author who I probably wouldn't have read if not for the 1001 list. An intricate plot which begins with a scene which draws you in, wanting an answer to the question Why?. The answer does come and it's disturbing but at the same time right.
Marias writes long detailed descriptions, which are beautifully worded. He's fast become one of my favourite authors, and I've just come back from the bookshop with All Souls. ...more
