Oooh! I had forgotten about this book until I saw Jessica put it on her to-read list! An excellent book, I read it years ago and still think about it.
Read this for book group a while ago, it was a good lead-in for me to Anchee Min and Amy Tan.
A totally engrossing account of life in China from the early 20th century until the 1980's. Based on the true story of the author's grandmother, who was a concubine in Manchuria, and her mother, who became an ardent communist revolutionary at the time of the Great March, and leading up to the trials which the author herself faced when her family was persecuted during the cultural revolution. I was never bored and now I'm dying to read Jung Chang's book on Mao.

This is an epic work that sheds like on what life in China was like under the cultural revolution. It brought me back to undergrad, when I last read much on this subject.
Although I feel I should have persevered, there was a bit too much torture and I gave up ... I'm sure it was a super awesome book though.
