A totally engrossing account of life in China from the early 20th century until the 1980's. Based on the true story of the author's grandmother, who was a concubine in Manchuria, and her mother, who became an ardent communist revolutionary at the time of the Great March, and leading up to the trials which the author herself faced when her family was persecuted during the cultural revolution. I was never bored and now I'm dying to read Jung Chang's book on Mao.

Although I feel I should have persevered, there was a bit too much torture and I gave up ... I'm sure it was a super awesome book though.
