Autobiographical tale of life as a grunt in Vietnam. Vividly brought back memories of the war, the culture at home, and the conflicts of the time.

I'm giving this five stars because I found it to be such a profound reading experience. Made up of short stories, vignettes, and autobiographical side notes, but given the scope and continuity of a novel, The Things They Carried is certainly The Book on Vietnam. The characters are real, the scenes of combat and death are vivid and frightening, but it is O'Brien's blending of fiction and confession that really sticks with you.

I think I only read selections from this book. But I might have read the whole thing. Who knows, it was college. :p
