I'm giving this five stars because I found it to be such a profound reading experience. Made up of short stories, vignettes, and autobiographical side notes, but given the scope and continuity of a novel, The Things They Carried is certainly The Book on Vietnam. The characters are real, the scenes of combat and death are vivid and frightening, but it is O'Brien's blending of fiction and confession that really sticks with you.

This book is an example to be held up on behalf of simplicity. More authors should read books like this one, that get the point across just fine without flowery language. You don't need to know the whole history of the Vietnam War to enjoy this book.

I think I only read selections from this book. But I might have read the whole thing. Who knows, it was college. :p

Forced to read this in high school, I never really appreciated it.
