Great writers walk a fine line between connecting to their readers by telling them things they already know, and surprising them with ideas that they haven't thought before. Kundera is a master of making the readers thoughts feel somewhat alien, even as he makes novel thoughts feel like the reader's own.

One of the best books I have read... ever!
I can understand how some people would have to hate this book. It is dense-full of philosophy, which could be a turn-off but which I thoroughly enjoyed!
Plus, Kundera writes in the most wunderful prose and I have never read about such a heart-rendering death of a dog. I cried at the end, which must have meant that it was really, really good and worth every second!
