Marvelous, amazing. Thanks Madeline for telling me about this one! I finished this a month ago and still find myself thinking about the characters, they are stuck in my brain. I always avoided Allende, as there were so many comparisons with Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who I do not love. They both write in the magical realism style and they both speak Spanish, those are their main similarities, I think. Love, Love, Love Allende.

I was very happily surprised by the quality of this book. With the timeframe of 60 or so years this chronicles a family in Argentina and their desputes. It also shows the political and social change leading up to the revolution and coupe. Some of the story uses magical realism which drew parrallels to Garcia/Marquez. But I think the characaters/setting/ and story line drove this book making it memorable to the reader.
