What Members Thought

I am not generally a fan of Stephen King, excepting of course the first four books of the Dark Tower series, but The Shining remains one of the most horrifying books that I have ever read. I try to reread it at least once every few years to experience the sheer claustrophobia of living in a haunted hotel in the Colorado Rockies for a winter with an alcoholic father who slowly goes insane. Kubrick's film version should be required viewing as well.

What I love about Stephen King: He gets kids. He understands their fears, their imaginations, their intelligence, and their loyalty.
I liked learning more about Jack and his father.
We are big fans at our house of the made-for-TV version of this book (1997), featuring Rebecca DeMornay as Wendy and Steven Weber as Jack. Stephen King makes an appearance as the Big Band leader. Ack, those hedge animals!
Looking forward to "Doctor Sleep." ...more
