Thought provoking book. Wolf looks back on her own childhood in east germany before, during and in the aftermath of the second world war from the pov of the adult she is. The book starts in 1932, but is written in the 1970's with the adult returning to her home town for a visit, a town now in Poland and known by a different name.

The writing style is very hard to follow but the material is absolutely essential for people to understand that this could happen again, and Nazi Germany was the symptom of a sickness that is not confined to Germany. I like how the author weaves in the Viet-Nam war as she is traveling through her childhood places in the 1970s in preparation for her book and I like how she also mentions all the other conflicts and fascist regimes throughout the world.
