This book took me very much by surprise. There were mixed reviews online but I thought it was a very bold work of genius. When you consider that this was first published in 1974, it must have sounded a resounding crack across the bows of HMS Misogyny.

Hmmm...I saw that two of my goodreads friends of my generation had given this book 2 and 3 stars respectively and still went ahead because this is such a modern classic for feminists. I can see how someone might connect to this book if s/he was depressed, stuck in a bad marriage, and trying to find her/himself. I was in a high school youth group with the author's child and so snuck a copy of How to Save Your Own Life when a teenager. I went looking at Fear of Flying, mostly because I thought of it as having a classic place in feminist literature, but in the end, could not get past its self indulgent tone. I have a very strong "What Generation X does not like about Baby Boomers" reaction to the book and could not finish it.

I guess this was an all right book. I couldn't put it down; read the whole thing in a couple of days. What I didn't like was that it made this former wildchild feel like a complete prude; I was very unimpressed with the flaunted sexuality in this book. While she found it empowering, I found it belittling.
