I liked this book, but I think I might have liked it more had I not forced myself to read it when I did. (my kindle copy came from the library and I started it late and and and). I m incredibly embarrassed to admit this but somehow I have never read a book by Toni Morrison. Much of what you would expect from a Toni Morrison novel--well written, beautiful language, lots of symbolism. It's a short novel but takes some thought to really get at the central themes. Sula, as the title implies, is the central character that ties the community together, and it's interesting to see how she and Nel become each other's ying and yang. Oh my! What a book! I forgot where I was, who I was, whether I had arms and legs or not. It was like an extended poem, like a meal that tasted the best all through, instead of just the last spoonful. Oh what a book!

A college class read. Strange, different, kind of fascinating.
