While I enjoyed the Orb of Truth, this second novel in this series was even better than the first. With magic rocks and dwarf slaves, this is a cross between Temple of Doom and Lord of the Rings. Heads up to fans of both.

This epic adventure was full of creatures, not just elves, gnomes and dwarves, but this time there were also kelpies and pirates. Yes, pirates! And not just any pirates, but An evil mystic is amassing five magical stones to unleash a dragon while Spilfer searches for his family.

While I enjoyed the Orb of Truth, this second novel in this series was even better than the first. With magic rocks and dwarf slaves, this is a cross between Temple of Doom and Lord of the Rings. Heads up to fans of both.

This epic adventure was full of creatures, not just elves, gnomes and dwarves, but this time there were also kelpies and pirates. Yes, pirates! And not just any pirates, but French vampire pirates! Tres cool! And the undead… Just WOW. If those weren’t enough, there were also chuulkath, beltothi, devlings and reegs. What are those? Yeah, I didn’t know either until I read this. After reading, I was excited to look them up and see just how made-up they truly are. I wish there were more descriptions on reegs but I still enjoyed them right alongside the rest of the new creatures. Of course, there were made up places, names, words and languages to go along with the new creatures. Yay!

Even though there are a host of new critters and living things, the cast of characters from the first book are all here too, of course, which is quite a considerable list. While hard to remember all of them at once, each one incredibly has depth. When presented with one, their own personality easily comes through and each is easily memorable and distinguished from the rest. Dulgin came front and center in this one, much to my delight. Love that funny little guy!

Again, like my review of the first, the writing is outstanding. It is a poetic, literary masterpiece, much like R.R. Martin but clear and easy to read, something difficult to pull off. If you’re anything like me, you might hesitate picking up and reading fantasy novels because of the inevitable complicated wordiness of the genre. Descriptive monologues? Gag me, right? Though this world is a fantasy world, it was described within the action of the story. Therefore, there were not lengthy descriptions really anywhere. Words flowed and the story jumped off the page. Double high five to Mr. Wyckoff for pulling this off again!

Just like the first, there are plenty of symbols to be found: Gods competing in a match, healing people, giving mercy, magic stones, elements of light and dark, the afterlife. The more philosophical fantasy reader will be intrigued and have plenty to ponder and discuss.

All in all, Brae has delivered a new quest, new characters and new languages but the same great fantasy writing quality readers expect. I would not be surprised if once again this book rises to the top of the charts and everyone’s reading lists. Just like the first of this series, it is family-friendly, action-packed and lets your imagination run wild. Not any more violent than the average cartoon when I was growing up, this is suitable for an audience of all ages. I highly recommend this one to anyone who can read.

This is the second book in Brae's amazing series. I was very glad to see that this one is a lot less like Tolkein's story. The characters are well developed and the plot works. I loved how each group had a quest to fulfill and yet all were needed to complete the real purpose of the story. His visual descriptions are amazing and I look forward to reading the next installment. ...more

THE DRAGON GOD BRAE WYCKOFF
The ride continues with Bridazak Spilf Abawkin and Dulgin along with other factions looking for a mysterious gem that may have dire consequences should it fall into the wrong hands. Spilf is also trying to locate lost family. With the same spirit of the ORB the adventure and the quest continues of good vs evil triumphing. The main characters are as likeable as the villains are evil beings.

Read the first book Orb of Truth. I thought it was awesome but this second book is just as awesome. It was one I couldn't put down and you won't want to either. It's a book for all to read. Can't wait to start reading the third book. The Vampire King. ...more
