I was definitely not in the target demographic as a reader for this book. Somehow I managed to make it through the whole thing. I thought the concept was interesting at first, it's like American Idol except the contestants are killing each other. It kinda reminded me of that old Schwarzenegger movie 'The running man'. It's good. You won't need to read far to see why this is so popular. Is it great literature? Not really. But it's very entertaining and provocative and memorable and even maybe a little original. I say maybe because the basic premise of a "game" that's televised where the competitors are there through some form of coercion and the goal is for them to kill each other immediately seems derivative of "Running Man." Serious, engaging young adult futuristic parable about young people thrust into violence. Another lord of the flies? No. Teen girl first person narrative, smart about survival, confused about first love. Typical? I couldn't say. Now I probably need to ready books 2 & 3 to see how things play out.
