Except for the seemingly ubiquitous female hooker character (honestly does all male SFF writers have to have a prostitute and/or sex slave as one of the main female characters? Is it mandatory? Some kind of unwritten rule?), this was a very good first novel. Placing it in Thailand was interesting, as I know very little of Bangkok, my only experience of it is 21 hours worth of lay overs, and while none of the characters are totally likeable (except maybe the Windup Girl herself), they are mostly ...more
